I found Good Magazine while waiting on my daughter's lightening delayed plane to dock and let her off at the Birmingham (AL) Airport. Airport reading material usually reflects an odd coupling of mindless pop-culture dribble and cutting edge, thought provoking periodicals. I picked up this periodical because the cover caught my attention - an AK-47 sketch in black on an orange background with "GOOD" in big bold block letters at the top. I thought "yeah, that's a good design."
For many, the AK-47 is a classic in the annals of good design. But good for what and for whom?
There's a not so subtle liberal slant in the question, a sentiment I unapologetically find boring. On the other hand, I'm becoming more attracted to the idea of good design. So, a little political hand-wringing doesn't in itself turn me off an otherwise valid question. I've always had a sense that most of the designs in my life are lacking. I'll be reading this site and its friends in the snooty section of the bookstore magazine rack a bit more in the coming months.
