Kill default Windows ding

The Windows operating circumvents my will by throwing a ding in when I adjust the volume, even when I tell it I don't want any sounds. This effect may take place on several software behavior. When faced with no sound, the system throws a default ding in, because you obviously failed to see the importance of this notification. I've seen this complaint on many forums. There is an easy, though annoying, fix.

Create or download a silent wave file. I've created one for your convenience (download the attachment on this page). You'll want to save this file somewhere easily accessed. I threw mine in C:\Windows\Media\ because that's the default location Windows looks for system sounds.

This location may change as Windows morphs, but it's mostly important that you can find the file.

Open Control Panel (usually found by clicking on start, perhaps settings, and it will be in the menu), Sound and Audio, and choose the Sounds tab. You should see where you can edit a sound profile. I turn off themes to speed up my desktop a bit, twirly-spinning-bubblegum-windows just annoy me. [But, you can also accomplish this by editing a desktop theme.] Here, just pick the sounds you don't want and insert the silent wave file in its stead. I used the Windows default sound profile (requires you not use another theme, if you do you'll have to edit that theme's sound profile). And, I replaced every single sound option with my silent wave file to make absolutely sure no program will ever use that annoying default beep again.

At some point I'm going to create a "fast, annoyance free theme," where I'll let folks download a signed theme that will have no windows effects and no sounds. I'm afraid for now I need to focus on paying work. If someone can create such a mod, feel free to share it with me.
