I've been on a Digg kick lately, so there's quite a few links there, on this site. I've been visiting it mostly for personal market research, but it's also got a TON of info streaming through it. And, some of it... a small portion of the stuff is good content.
7 Effective Habits has been done, overdone, and burnt! But, it's always a review anybody that's not producing 100% during their work hours should do regularly. Here's a clip from an email I sent one of my developers tonight:
I know this is going to sound "fatherly," but I really think it would behoove you to learn to respect others' time a little more.
I'm not the best example of this. I realize that. But, I still get really jacked out of shape when people disrespect my schedule, whether I show respect for it or not. Most successful people are not very forgiving of people who waste their time. I've developed that trait recently. I used to be very laid back about others wasting my time. But, when someone wastes your time, they're taking your life away, stealing what's most precious to you. That's not what they intend to do, they don't see it as a big deal. But, it's what it is, period. You have to avoid people who legitimately waste your time.
I went on to link to this great little article/blog about effective designers. It's as important to remember that "creativity" isn't magic, as it is to know that ANYTHING isn't magic. It's all hard work, and good stewardship of your time.
Here's his 7:
- Work quickly, produce a lot
- Attend to details
- Be versatile
- Make an effort to learn
- Anticipate problems
- Set goals
- Display a positive attitude
