University of Alabama vs. Free Speech

The University of Alabama has come under fire for it's intolerance of free speech. Auburn (the other big state university) has also been known as a school unfriendly to free speech.

It makes headlines because it's in Alabama. But, don't think for one moment that northern and western colleges don't have their own versions of censorship.

The realities of southern citizenship and liberal bias are obvious. Southerners deal with things justSmile, Your Mom Chose Life like other people, only they get branded racists, bigots, and fascists much faster. Many schools deal harshly with speech they don't like. At Harvard a student had the audacity to print up t-shirts and signs that said "Smile, Your Mom Chose Life". The reaction was pure vitriol.

The list of students that came into direct conflict with school officials and student influenced organizations during the 2000 political season shew a new light on campus bias for me personally. I worked with students to promote the film FahrenHYPE 9/11 to show the other side of the Michael Moore argument. Fahreheit 9/11 seemed to gather praise and public funding on campuses around the US, as well did Mr. Moore's tour. However, in stark contrast, students who wanted to show the other side of the debate encountered attempts to stifle their activity. Where was the liberal "free speech" outrage then? Silent. Or, was it screaming "Shut up!"
