Free Speech means free to say what we say you can
The debate over Facebook's decision to allow Holocaust deniers to continue spewing their vitriol has many upset. The idea is that such speech should be censored in the private space of Facebook. Some agree with European laws that make such conversations, even suggesting the numbers may be inaccurate, a crime punishable by imprisonment. Debating the facts surrounding the Holocaust is illegal in several European nations. There is a state accepted truth, and disagreeing vocally is simply disallowed.
The question isn't whether or not Holocaust deniers are disgusting or stupid. The question is whether a website should get in the business of this kind of censorship, and on a larger note whether governments should dictate what a person can and cannot say. If you believe global warming is going to destroy life on earth, isn't questioning global warming data a crime against humanity? If you believe any speech apposing same sex marriage is hate speech, then why not make it a crime to speak against same sex marriage. Perhaps Bibles should be burned and reciting Leviticus 18:22 should be a crime punishable by imprisonment. To Americans this is a detestable idea, though perhaps to a shrinking number.
The question isn't one of taste, judgment, truth, or feelings. The question is one of censorship.
