Run a Faster Windows PC, by Keeping it Clean

A fresh installation of Windows with all its updates and tweaks run's fantastic for most people. Then, we start throwing gunk into the system, including antivirus programs, firewalls, etc. and all the garbage we collect from the slumasphere: the dreggs of the public internet.

It is possible to run a faster, cleaner PC. It's also possible to keep it that way, even if you're not a computer genius. Just a few commercial tools and a little planning will make it an easy process - and your PC much more useful for much longer.

Ali's First PHP Script

Alexandria's first real php script. I really wrote this one all by myself and I'm only ten, thanks to my dad who works with computers for a living. He is teaching me all the things that he knows, and he said that if I learn how to work on computers like he does he'll get me my very own labtop!! :)

I wish that my sister Victoria's bird would shut-up! I think I'm going to save money to buy it a shock coller because it's sceaming hurts my ears.

Now I'm going to test variables.

My name is Ali

INFO: Simple, fast, straightforward... and a dash of JasonN blunt opinions.

Ever since 1997, I've been giving people the straight dope on PCs and internet technologies. I didn't come to tech as an Information Systems engineer, or via tradeschool, college, even a career choice. I got here selling stuff, very non-tech stuff at that. I first noticed the internet as a commercial opportunity in 1994, then in 1997, someone talked me into starting an ISP (Internet Service Provider). I was young, and learned fast. The rest of the 90s was a fast track conversion to hybrid businessman / tech geek. You may call me guru if you wish :)

Creating ICO Files (Favorite Icons)

This is an extremely simplistic topic, but many people get stuck building their site, or one for someone else, and suddenly find this silly little file is fairly important to some people. Most annoying to me is that if I don't create a favicon.ico for each and every website I put up, I get logs of 404 errors, or a failure to find the file. Web browsers ask for this file, it seems every time they request any content from a website. It's the icon, or the small graphic that shows up in your saved favorites to mark or brand a site. It also shows up left of the URL in the address bar. It's a small and relatively insignificant image, but helps brand your site.

PC Component Brand Loyalty

Brands are mostly meaningless in today's market. The chance the company that slapped its label on the device actually participated in any way with its manufacturing is very small. One day I'll buy brand X and it's awesome. The next, it's garbage. And, I can't see any manner of trusted prediction.

The tech market is totally commoditized.

Security Report: Windows vs Linux

The fact is Linux is much more secure than Windows by any standard. The only excuse to run Windows is that your software vendor is your master, and you are forced to run their software on Windows because they make you.

Hackers, Thieves, Terrorists, and Spam

A growing problem plaguing online transactions is fraud. There are many methods of acquiring credit cards, bank account numbers, and personal information to commit crimes ranging from petty theft to funding and facilitating terrorism.

I've personally received emails requesting that I log into a bogus site and clarify some details about my account. One that caught my eye was an email that asked me to help eBay with a "security issue". Of course, eBay had nothing to do with the email. That site was hosted in the UK and collected numbers from Paypal related bank accounts and the user's passport. Why would they want passport numbers? By linking a real passport to real bank information, your identity could be very useful for criminal activities. They could easily manufacture a very real looking set of identification and travel related documents.

Virus Vulnerability in Antivirus Software

The Register reports that F-secure has released fixes for a bug that allows virus authors to exploit their antivirus program.  Similar problems were recently announced about a Symantec anti-virus flaw.

Linux and FreeBSD users that just use best practices against intrusion, instead of antivirus software, aren't effected.
