Video services: social, embedding, free and commercial
Most people and businesses need some video services occasionally. More distribution is better than less. Free beats cost any day of the week. And though I encourage people to control their content (keep a copy local, on site, and redundant so you don't break your presentation due to someone else's incompetence or lacking motivation), I also encourage people to capitalize on free access to new people.
Find people where they are and broadcast in their preferred space.
I strongly encourage my clients to broadcast their videos everywhere. You can't have too many people listening to a commercial presentation. I'll readily compare a million untargeted views of a video to ten quality views. The million win each time. It's the cost per sale you should focus on, not the number of people watching your content that don't matter. And, if it cost you zilch for someone to watch your vid, that's a zero cost per view, meaning there's no reason to withhold it from anyone.
There are a few different types of video services:
- live
- recorded
- live/recorded
- invite only
- public, premium
- social
My clients will likely use all these at some point. You're message may be private, targeted, secret, public, urgent, interactive, evanescent, or everlasting. Each medium serves its role.
Social video services are social websites that primarily focus on video viewing and commenting. Some are extremely niche while others simply offer a variety of new ways to access an old medium: video.
- Seesmic focusses on social videos, mostly vlogging and allows video comments, free
- YouTube is one of the largest video viewing websites, offers commenting, rating, and friend/follows, free
- Viddler is a video hosting service that also offers branded players, free and permium
- Yahoo! video hosts video on a large though slightly less often connective (people meeting people) network
- MySpace has a video service for its users, but it's mostly not a video sharing network
- DailyMotion is a free hosted video service
- Blip.tv is a neat free hosted video service, offers nice quality
- Veoh is an ad-driven video hosting service
- i2TV is a free video hosting service
